When we talk about Hong Kong the conversation is always about the Victoria Harbour skyline and tourist spots. Friends who visit there rarely venture further from Hong Kong Island than the very tip of Kowloon Peninsula.
For me, the essence of Hong Kong is not the shiny skyscrapers, but the Lion Rock overlooking the former manufacturing estates where the territory's early wealth was created and in whose shadow the working class majority live. It is to Hong Kongers what Victoria Peak (the mountain behind the famous skyline) is to the tourists. It represents the working class foundations of the territory, the real Hong Kong.
